National Geographic just announced that it's handing over 73% ownership to Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox — immediately raising questions about the future of climate coverage from one of the most trusted names in science. Executives are already on the defensive, claiming the deal won't change anything. But Murdoch has a troubling history of editorial meddling, and there's no measures in place to assure his denial of climate science won't taint National Geographic's historically excellent coverage.
Other top publications enforce editorial independence by appointing Public Editors who advocate on behalf of the public and investigate complaints of editorial interference. If National Geographic readers call for a Public Editor, we can show the board that its sterling reputation will be tarnished unless its new owners respond with action.
