I strongly oppose the nomination of Sam Clovis — a climate change denier with no background in food or agriculture — as the Undersecretary for Research, Education and Economics (REE) at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The USDA needs strong leadership to support the hard-working scientists who ensure the agency’s scientific integrity and provide policymakers and the American public with the best information available.

In solidarity with the many people and organizations that are working to protect the environment, a safe and abundant food supply, and the well-being of our food and farming communities, I strongly urge you to oppose the nomination of Sam Clovis as the Undersecretary for REE at the USDA.

Trump nominated a right-wing climate denier, Sam Clovis, to the top science position at the US Department of Agriculture — Undersecretary for Research, Education and Economics.

Clovis is a Trump campaign advisor and former radio talk-show host with NO background in science or agriculture. The Department of Agriculture is on the front lines of the climate crisis, from studying how to reduce carbon emissions from U.S. food production to planning how the nation's farmers will adapt to more severe weather patterns like droughts and floods.

Yet Clovis doesn't even accept the reality of climate change. When asked in 2014, he said this about climate change: "I am extremely skeptical. I have looked at the science and I have enough of a science background to know when I’m being boofed. And a lot of the science is junk science."

Further, Clovis has a history of racist and offensive rants, including calling progressives “liars, race traders and race ‘traitors.’"

Clovis' nomination requires Senate confirmation, so we have a very real chance to stop it. Add your name to call on all Senators to reject Sam Clovis as chief scientist at USDA.
