Tell Germany: No more public money for dirty fossil gas

Send Your Message

Your letter will be delivered to German Ministries of Environment, Finance, Economic Cooperation and Development, and Economic Affairs and Energy:

To live up to the Paris Agreement, Germany can’t allow one penny more of public money to flow to oil, gas, and coal. With the EBRD revising its energy strategy, now is the time for you to take a stand for future generations and stop funding oil, gas, and coal projects.

Heat waves are devastating large parts of the globe, while hurricane season is just beginning. Our window of opportunity to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement is rapidly shrinking. Given this context, using public taxpayer dollars to support fossil fuel expansion is dangerous and irresponsible.

Last December, the World Bank took an important first step by committing to end all financing for oil, gas, and coal exploration and extraction. I’m asking that you follow their lead and go further, joining thousands of institutions around the world and leading by ensuring that the EBRD’s revised energy sector strategy excludes financing for all oil, gas, and coal infrastructure.

Now is the time to step up and show Germany’s climate leadership. Please work to ensure that oil, gas, and coal finance are excluded from the EBRD’s portfolio. The world can’t wait – our future depends on you taking decisive action to limit fossil fuel finance (oil, gas, and coal).

Heat waves are devastating large parts of the globe, while hurricane season is just beginning. Our window of opportunity to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement is rapidly shrinking. Given this context, sending more public taxpayer dollars to support fossil fuel expansion is sheer madness. We simply can't expand the fossil fuel industry if we expect to fight climate change.

Over the last six months, we’ve delivered tens of thousands of petitions to the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), as they draft the bank’s new energy lending policy. We’ve asked them to end all funding for oil, gas, and coal through emails, social media pushes, lobby meetings, in-person actions, and more.

Now, we’ve gotten word that Germany is dragging its feet and joining other climate-destructive actors in blocking stronger language to exclude oil and fossil gas. For a supposed “climate leader,” this is unacceptable. It’s time for Germany to follow the lead of the World Bank and thousands of institutions around the world and confront fossil fuel expansion head on by leading the charge at the EBRD.

There are four Ministers in the German government responsible for this position, and they and their aides all need to hear from you:

    • Svenja Schulze, German Minister for Environment
    • Olaf Scholz, German Minister for Finance
    • Gerd Müller, German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development
    • Peter Altmaier, German Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy

Germany needs to hear from you before the EBRD is locked into five years of new fossil fuel finance. Send your message today to demand that Germany stop blocking progress and help the EBRD lead the way to #StopFundingFossils.
